FOLDING HANDBAGS

Juliana Busbee (1876–1962) was a pioneering American designer whose vision helped shape the artistic identity of Juliana Owen’s hometown, Seagrove, North Carolina. Busbee influenced this pottery region through design leadership—elevating utilitarian objects by inspiring new forms, materiality, and aesthetics. Her work challenged convention and expanded the possibilities of American craft.
Growing up in a family of ceramic artists, Owen developed an early understanding of structure and three-dimensional thinking. Sculpture, form, and material sensitivity shaped how she interpreted objects and informed the foundation of her own design practice. By studying objects in their flat states, Owen learned to see the planning, engineering, and hidden complexities behind their construction.
The Busbee Bag carries this lineage forward; designed through the same lens of intentionality, celebrating structure, adaptability, quiet innovation, and beauty. Each fold becomes a kinetic or tactile dialogue between form and function, inviting the wearer to engage with the design itself.
Using high-quality leather, this bag transforms from a 2D shape into a 3D vessel, mirroring architectural principles and the design sensibilities that shaped Owen. Crafted in Chicago and designed in Boston, The Busbee Bag embodies the intersection of craftsmanship, design, and engineering, made for those who value artistry that endures.

During this round, all bags are sold through Ben Owen Pottery.
